Saturday 2nd to 9th June 2012

Join us for a Women’s Trail Riding Week

In the French Pyrenees surrounded by superb mountain scenery, it’s singletrack heaven around here and lends itself perfectly to classic trail riding with endless opportunities.

Guided by Scott Contessa rider Angela Pendry, with over 20 years riding and racing experience I’m offering women the chance to cruise the trails, pick up tips and skills along the way and just have some great fun days out. Although competent bike handling and good fitness are a must, it’s a great opportunity to improve on and learn new skills, descending, technical bike handling & all amongst a group of girls. The week includes five days out on the bikes, a day mid-week relaxing or trying out another mountain sport…plus we’ll have a trip to the local thermal spa and a tapas night out in Spain.

ARC’TERYX ADVENTURE SHOT

ARC’TERYX ADVENTURE SHOT PHOTO COMP at ShAFF

One of the most exciting events at ShAFF each year is the Arc’teryx Adventure Shot. The evening is hosted by Niall Grimes and Alex Ekins. Niall starts things off with a kind of quiz that was described by one audience member as a bus-crash! That’s kind of the point. His humour is certainly unusual! With little structure, plenty of prizes, and heaps of hilarity the audience then head into a short break and generally head to the bar. Alex then takes over to introduce five photographers. Each represents a different discipline / sport, and each has five minutes or so to impress the audience and judges with an audio-visual spectacular on the big screen and sound system. This year the five photographers were Andy Day representing Parkour, Cheryl King representing Cycling, Gavin Newman representing Cave Diving, Lucask Warzecha representing Climbing, and Jordan Tybon representing Slacklining. Jordan had previously been selected from a strong contingent of open competitors who had submitted examples of their work to ShAFF. We were very pleased that he had taken the time to fly over from Berlin for the weekend. Sponsored by Arc’teryx the competition is fierce, with £500 in cash up for grabs for the winner, and a hefty amount of Arc’teryx kit for the runners up.
You can also check out the 2010 and 2011 entries here.

On the night Jordan triumphed by a whisker, with Gavin Newman in second place and Andy Day in third, with Cheryl King and Lucask Warzecha taking equal fourth.

Screened over one weekend at the art deco Showroom Cinema in Sheffield UK’s biggest independent cinema outside London, voted the region’s best cultural venue.

Also talks and lectures on epic climbs, runs and rides by world-class adventurers.

Great value – One ticket buys you a multi-film screening so you can see several films in one hit.  Passionate about your sport?  Then try our specialist selections.  Want a high energy hit?  Then book our Adrenaline showing.  Fancy inspiration and escapism?  Try the Adventure Medley.

Family friendly – our morning Young Adventurer showings have sold out for the last few years so this year we’ll also have afternoon matinees with urban orienteering afterwards.

Chill out in the bar/cafe between screenings with live music, comfy-seating and free wifi.  During the day grab a light lunch and coffee with friends and in the evenings, book dinner made by experienced chefs with fresh, local produce.   Why not try the great selection of on tap or bottled beers, wines and ciders – not forgetting the awesome cake cabinet!

Getting there’s easy – We’re just across the road from the mainline train station with regular services to the Peak District, Manchester and the UK, there are also local buses, trams and a plenty of nearby car-parks.

We’re growing in the face of a global recession.  Now in its 7th year, for the past six years 100% of the audience said they’d come back again and recommend it to a friend.  ShAFF 2011 was our best ever year with a 77% increase in ticket sales, an amazing film programme and a packed series of lectures including the legendary Steve Peat.

2012 promises to be even bigger and better with exciting headline lectures from the world of Running, Mountain Biking and Climbing, yet another great line up of films presented in high definition, art and photography exhibitions, the amazing kit sale, competitions, a cracking live music line up in the bar, more kids screenings and plenty more besides.

Save Our Outdoor Education Centres

Help Save Our Outdoor Education Centres

A petition to the government has been launched calling for them to protect outdoor education centres from imminent closure.

One in three Local Authority outdoor education centres are facing closure which could mean millions of young people are denied potentially life-changing experiences, at a time when health, physical activity and contact with nature are all declining.  Some children from poorer and disadvantaged groups may not have another opportunity to share a night away from home and visit places they would not otherwise see. The sad fact is that closure need not happen, in many cases given extra time these centres could become self sufficient.  If centres close they may not reopen again.

You can help by signing the petition, set up by the FSC with the support of Association for Heads of Outdoor Education Centres, English Outdoor Council, Institute for Outdoor Learning and National Association of Field Studies Officers.  If they reach 100,000 signatures this year the issue will be considered for debate in the House of Commons.

To raise awareness of the campaign they have created a short piece of video which you can watch by following this link:

Or to go direct to sign the petition visit http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/26661

Act now to protect these unique opportunities for young people.

Thank You

Cheshire Classic Women’s Road Race

Cheshire Classic Women’s Road Race

Part of the British Cycling National Series

Cheshire Classic 2011

Epic sponsor for the Cheshire Classic

The Cheshire Classic Women’s Road Race has picked up a new sponsor for 2012, road bike specialist Epic Cycles. Thanks to Epic Cycles’ sponsorship the Cheshire Classic Women’s Road Race will now have the full support of National Escort Group motorcycle marshals and a motorcycle paramedic.

The race, which takes place on a challenging course on the outskirts of Northwich in Cheshire on Sunday 22nd April, is the opening race to the Women’s British Cycling National Series promoted by Weaver Valley Cycling Club.

The 2011 edition of the Cheshire Classic, which was won by now Junior World Champion, Lucy Garner, was overshadowed by an incident on a fast stretch of bypass which hospitalised two riders.

Promoter Terry Veal commented; “The safety of the riders is always our number one priority, we have a great group of marshals around the course but thanks to the support of Epic Cycles it has allowed us to put in place professional support from the NEG and to also have a trained paramedic on the course too.”

Epic Cycles’ Phil Weaver added; “We already support a Women’s racing team and being able to support a reputable race like the Cheshire Classic fitted in perfectly.”

The Cheshire Classic has a long standing history in Women’s cycling and was one of the first races on the National Series calendar when it first began. Past winners include Mandy Jones, Lizzie Armitstead and Nicole Cooke. This year sees the launch of a dedicated website for the race at www.cheshireclassicroadrace.co.uk and a Twitter feed @CheshireClassic

The route sees the riders tackle 10 laps of a 7.7km circuit. The circuit is a mixture of winding country road and fast flowing bypass tarmac. The circuit’s famous point is the climb up Acton Bridge Hill (known to locals as the Cliff) which also hosts the finish of the race.

Sponsor Epic Cycles is a dedicated road bike store, with over 12,500sq ft devoted entirely to road bikes and their relative. Ranging from sportive and road racing bikes to commuting and cross bikes, they have a huge choice of models from carefully selected manufacturers to suit all budgets, requirements and levels of experience. They also operate a demo fleet of over 100 road bikes and a free professional fitting session is included with every bike purchase.

News of the sponsorship will be bring optimism to Women’s cycling after recent reports from both riders and promoters struggling to find sponsors for their 2012 races; “It is a great commitment from Epic Cycles, Women’s cycling has fantastic scope for growth,” commented Terry Veal, “we would still like to add a few more elements to the race and we would be interested to hear from any other parties interested in sponsoring the Cheshire Classic.”

Laurent Jalabert inspects 2012 Worlds Course

Press Release

Limburg, The Netherlands, 24 January 2012

French team-coach Laurent Jalabert inspected the course of the UCI Road World Championships men’s road race. Jalabert, World Champion (Time Trial) in 1997 (San Sebastian) predicts an exciting race in the Dutch hills of Limburg.

During a press conference after the inspection of the track the French coach spoke frankly about the track, chances, dangers and possible title favourites. According to Jalabert the track is selective and hard enough to become an epic race. During the long approach to the circuit (100 kilometers) the French team has to be aware that any time differences are controllable. “The wind is going to be a determining factor in this”, concludes the former top rider. It’s a beautiful, difficult, fast and challenging course where time differences have to be kept in check. Jalabert knows from his experience that the Cauberg, in his own view “a unpredictable climb”, is the defining challenge. If you want to win there are two options according to the Frenchman; “one, you go full throttle from the foot of the hill all the way till the finish line, or two you pull away at the top of the Cauberg and don’t look behind till you pass the line.”

The finish line is one kilometer behind the top of the Cauberg. This gives other riders, who are less explosive than Phillippe Gilbert, the chance to come back. Jalabert predicts that a small group of favourites is going to decide the championship in the last kilometers of the race. Asked the question who these favourites are, Jalabert gave a shortlist: Gilbert, Hushovd, Freire, Valverde and Boasson Hagen.
